About the event

The original line-up of Big Jazz Apple perform original compositions and standards at Moons with the addition of drummer Carl Woodward to add some spice. Comprised of Bill Martin (tenor saxophone), Jesse Kokaua (guitar) and Andy Lynch (electric bass), this local group will present a number of new tunes written by Bill which build on the tradition of bebop and blues that came out of New York in the 50s and 60s.


Martin and Kokaua have performed for many years as a duo, with the sound of Martin’s tenor saxophone amply supported by the finger picking of Kokaua, who combines rhythmic jazz voicings with melodic flourishes and bass-lines to flesh out the arrangements. Tunes such as Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” and Parker’s “Anthropology” have become staples, alongside Bossa Novas by Atonio Carlos Joabim and modern bop numbers by Miles Davis.
