About the event

Gardening Music with Jake Baxendale

Join us for the launch of the 2024 Hanover Hall Autumn Concert season with a performance by award-winning Wellington saxophonist and composer, Jake Baxendale. Accompanying Baxendale is an all-star lineup comprised of well-known South Island musicians. Bringing a novel approach to improvisation, Baxendale presents his new compositions with a South Island band under the title of “Gardening Music”, an approach that is rooted in a deep relationship with the soil and the act of nurturing the earth. Hailing from Te Whanganui-A-Tara, Baxendale infuses his music with a distinctive blend of expression, nature-inspired creativity, and a strong sense of community, an approach which reflects his upbringing in beautiful Mohua. Gardening Music combines Baxendale’s passion for gardening and its parallels with music, uniting the apparently contradictory activities of being immediate, physical work and making music.

Tui-Award-winning composer Baxendale is joined by keyboardist Michael Crawford, double bassist Nathan Berg and drummer Cameron Finlay (Christchurch) for this special concert. Taking inspiration from environmental writers like Anna Tsing and Robin Wall-Kimmerer, Baxendale’s music explores growth, relationships, and sustenance themes, offering a unique and captivating musical experience. Baxendale’s musical journey began at NZSM Te Kōkī from 2007-2011 and soon he began collaborating with various musical groups and artists. In 2012, Jake recorded his debut album 'Nerve' with The Jac, featuring compositions by himself and Callum Allardice, a group that performed at Hanover Hall to a sell-out audience in 2021. Baxendale’s hard work, dedication and creativity have earned him recognition and accolades, including nominations for the NZ Music Best Jazz Album Award and the APRA Best Jazz Composition award.

Gardening Music with Jake Baxendale promises to be a soulful and enriching evening of music, offering not just a concert but a transformative journey. As Baxendale and his quintet take the stage with this unique and creative musical concept. The performance will be a testament to the power of music to connect us with our surroundings and evoke nature’s beauty and wonder. It will be a night to remember, where music and nature converge to create a truly magical experience.
