About the event

Tenor saxophone prodigy Isaac Randel returns home to Dunedin to perform a tribute to John Coltrane at Hanover Hall on September 19 with some of the Wellington jazz scene's brightest new talents. Having emerged as a significant new talent on the Dunedin jazz scene, Randel has recently spent three years studying jazz performance at the New Zealand School of Music and has there formed a fruitful collaboration with pianist Nico Buhne and double bassist Jack Harris. Along with local drummer Carl Woodward, this quartet will present a variety of originals and standards made famous by John Coltrane, including material from his early, middle and late periods. 


Providing support on the night will be the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Bill Martin, who will be presenting some contemporary Big Band arrangements of John Coltrane compositions, including the classics “Moment’s Notice”, “Giant Steps” and “Vierd Blues”.
