Jake Baxendale: Waypeople


The next stop in the Autumn Series at Hanover Hall is an exotic, multicultural experience led by Wellington-based saxophonist and composer Jake Baxendale. Baxendale will lead his group of some of Aotearoa’s leading jazz and contemporary musicians through his new album, Waypeople, inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s English-language version of Tao Te Ching, a foundational work in Taoism. Originally performed with a visual component, this concert will focus on the music – the transformation of the timeless Taoist philosophy of harmony, balance, and paradox into sound. Grounded in jazz, with features of Chinese classical music and improvisation, Waypeople fuses lyrical storytelling with meditative textures and powerful ensemble interplay.


Born in the UK, Baxendale is no stranger to Dunedin audiences having performed his program Gardening Music in 2024. In 2017, he was commissioned by the Wellington Jazz Festival for a collaboration between his prog-jazz group, The Jac, and Korean…
