Squaring the Circle: DYJO Plays Stevie Wonder

The Dunedin Jazz Club gets funky in September with the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra presenting a set of Stevie Wonder tunes arranged for Big Band at Hanover Hall. For this concert, DYJO band director Bill Martin has selected a range of Stevie Wonder tunes that explore his classic repertoire from the 1970s through to experimentation with electronic instruments in the 80s, as well as collaborations with Brazillian artists in the 2010s. In the second set, Mike Gaches will lead some of Dunedin’s finest musicians who make up the “Academy of Phunk”, with the presentation of a set of high energy funk tunes that feature the talents of vocalists Deane Ellison, Davina Gilbert and Claire Louise. So get ready for a night of funk, swing, bossa nova and fast paced jazz to shake off the mid winter blues!
